Effective Boils Treatment
Boils are also known as skin abscesses. This is a kind of skin infection that grows on the skin. It’s appearance is reddish in color, firm and has soft center. It basically, looks like an over-sized pimple. The infection process is gradual, and the boil changes it’s appearance as days go by. The center of the boil is filled with yellowish pus or abscess.
The key is to drain the pus inside the boil. Once, the pus is completely out. The skin will start to heal. Now, that we have a refresher on what boils are. What really should a person do or how will a person with a boil treat it?
Most people, especially when it’s their first time to have a boil. The tendency is that they treat the boil like a pimple. They won’t stop touching it. And because you can feel the bump and the center of the boil, you will try several times to pop it. That is not advisable. You should avoid touching it and trying to pop it.
Here are simple pointers on how to treat boils:
- Keep the boil and the skin surrounding it clean and dry.
- Do not try to pop or squeeze the boil. This can only cause further irritation.
- Avoid wearing something tight on the boil. For example, socks or the garter from underwear.
- Wait it out a few days, before attempting to drain out the pus.
- You can tell that the boil is ready, when the center of clearly sticks out. It will be white, to yellowish-cream in color.
- You can drain out the boil by using a disinfected safety pin or needle. Disinfect it by soaking the pin or needle in some isopropyl alcohol, hand sanitizer or any disinfectant that is safe for the skin.
- Be sure that your hands are very clean or the person that will drain it out for you has clean hands too.
- Disinfect the boil and the area surrounding it.
- You will notice that the skin on the center of the boil is just thin and soft. Be sure to just make a slight poke. Gently insert the disinfected pin or needle on the center.
- Once a hole is made, just gently squeeze out all the pus. Use some tissue or cotton balls or pads. At first it will be all yellowish to orange color and later on will become a little bloody.
- Once the boil is drained. Clean and disinfect the wound. Put some iodine solution and bandage if necessary.
You can treat any boil in this manner as long has it has a soft center or as they refer to it the “head” or the “eye” of the boil. There are some boils that tend to become very inflamed underneath the skin. And there’ll be no way to externally drain it out. These boils don’t have any “head” or “eye”, that’s why they can’t be drained.
These kind of boils should be treated by a doctor. The doctor can either prescribe an antibiotic or perform a minor operation to properly drain out the boil. When these kind of boils are not treated properly, it can cause high intensity fever. Due to the infection. A doctor then will prescribe required medication to reduce the fever.
